| 食虫虻科 Asilidae 双翅目短角亚目的一科。通称盗虻。世界性分布。世界已知4700多种。中国已知200种。成虫体长5～50毫米。体黑色，灰色，淡黄色，淡灰色，淡红色，有的具金属绿色、蓝色光泽。头部具细小的颈，可活动，触角向前方伸展，具1～2节端刺或粗壮的触角芒。完全变态，一年或两年完成一个世代。幼虫有5～8个龄期。幼虫和成虫均捕食其他昆虫；成虫在飞翔时捕食蝇类、蝗虫、蝽象、蛾蝶、甲虫、蜂类等，捕食的大部为植物的害虫，常视为有益的天敌昆虫。但在养蜂地区，捕食蜜蜂，有一定的为害。对同类有自相残杀的现象。幼虫生活在土中、枯枝落叶或腐烂的木材中，捕食其他昆虫，如地下害虫蛴螬。
