每年3月中旬，即在“惊蛰”、“春分”之间，如遇气温回升达到10℃左右时，在南岳海拔800～1000m高度的水里和浇池里，如龙池、广济寺一带，就会出现一种奇异现象：无数蟾蜍聚集一起，一对对地堆叠起来竟达0.66～0.99m高，形成罕见的“蛙塔”奇观。有时“蛙塔”多达几十座至数百座，持续时间少则三五日，多则10天。当蟾蜍察觉有降温前兆时，“与会者”便会在一夜之间突然全部消失。这现象其实是动物求偶交配的集合，是一种由气候因素所引起的物候现象。
