From the 29th of July to the 25th of August in 1999, a white faced heron ( Egretta novaehollandiea ) was found in the shallow water near the central islet of Yuandang Lake in Xiamen, Fujian Province.

[形态]羽色洁白,但体较小而喙较强。背上蓑羽特长,常超出尾外。胸前亦簇生蓑羽,但较背上的短小。眼淡黄色,喙黑色,非生殖期呈黄色或具黑端,面部裸皮鲜黄色,腿和脚黑色。
[生态]中白鹭在野外为常见鸟类。夏季常见于稻田、沼泽湿地和沿海滩涂港汊。笼养中白鹭产要是动物园，也有少数群众及湿地的一些旅游风景区等。
该鸟停立时常缩一脚，而仅以一脚踏地，涉游浅水时，似农民用舂或锄的状态，故"舂锄"。白鹭常与牛背鹭等成混合群,但较它寻食积极,常在水中捕食蛙、鱼和水生昆虫。集群营巢于青翠的山上，与山水相映构成一幅美丽的画卷。
饲养管理、繁殖、经济意义等均与大白鹭相似。
