| 锆石 zircon 化学成分为Zr〔SiO4〕的岛状结构硅酸盐矿物。旧称锆英石和风信子石。经常有铪类质同象置换锆 ，HfO2最高可达22％～24％。还常含有微量的稀土、铌、钽、钍和铀等。由于成分中存在放射性元素，因而可以发生非晶质化。在此过程中还可发生水化，形成水锆石。四方晶系，晶体呈短柱状，通常为四方柱、四方双锥或复四方双锥的聚形。由于形成条件的不同，晶体形态不同。如碱性火成岩中的锆石四方双锥发育呈双锥状；酸性火成岩中的锆石柱面和锥面均发育，呈柱状；中性火成岩中的锆石柱面发育，并有复四方双锥出现，故锆石的晶形可作标型特征，锆石颜色多样，有紫红、黄褐、淡黄、淡红、绿、灰、无色等。金刚光泽，莫氏硬度7.5～8，比重4.4～4.8。色泽美丽而透明的锆石可作宝石。锆石在各种火成岩中作为副矿物产出，其中在酸性岩和碱性岩中分布广泛。在碱性岩和碱性伟晶岩中有时可富集。挪威南部霞石正长岩和俄罗斯乌拉尔的正长伟晶岩中产有大量锆石。锆石常富集于砂矿中。宝石级锆石产于老挝、柬埔寨、泰国、缅甸等。中国华东、华南、华北等地碱性玄武岩中也有宝石级锆石产出。锆石含ZrO267.1％，是提取锆和铪的最重要矿物原料。又是国防尖端工业中重要的矿物材料。锆石熔点高达3000℃以上，可作航天器高温绝热瓦的材料。
