大屿岛位于厦门西港南部，距厦门岛1.9km，距鼓浪屿仅1.1km，岛西南面与海沧嵩屿仅隔0.3km，陆地面积0.186平方公里，岛上最高点海拔62m，岸线长2.3km.鸡屿岛位于九龙江口海域，距厦门6.3km，距鼓浪屿4.4km，北面距海沧1.5km，南面为龙海市。鸡屿岛陆地面积为平方公里，岛上最高点海拔67.9m，岸线长3.3km，总面积为2.17平方公里。
1995年10月30日，福建省政府批准成立厦门大屿岛白鹭自然保护区，范围包括大屿、鸡屿的全部陆域和最低潮位线以上滩涂，包括滩涂，两岛直线距离4.4km.
白鹭是世界珍稀、最具魅力的海滨观赏鸟类，是湿地环境好坏的重要指示生物，厦门自古以来称为"鹭岛"，是世界白鹭的重要栖息和繁殖地，是黄嘴白鹭（又称中国白鹭、唐白鹭）的模式种产地，在动物分类学和动物区系学上具有重要意义。
