控制工作机械的运动方向或行程大小的主令电器。各种行程开关都带有一个类似于微动开关的元件。当工作机械压到开关的控制钮时，开关内部的触头进行转换，使工作机械的运动方向发生变化;当机械作用去除后,开关内部的触头便自动恢复到原来状态。为了将工作机械发出的信号传递给行程开关，在工作机械上通常装有一固定在其运动部件上的触块。触块或者直接与控制钮接触，或者通过行程开关上的传动杆将机械力传递给控制钮。传动杆有直动式和摆动式。后者装设了滚轮，当触块与其接触时，摆动杆摆动，并且通过与之联结的凸轮压迫控制钮。采用直动式传动杆和具有单滚轮的传动杆行程开关，在施加于杆件或滚轮上的外力消失后，即与触块脱离接触后，开关能自动复位。采用具有双滚轮的传动杆行程开关,当外力去除后，开关自身无法复位,必须待触块作返回运动再次与滚轮接触时，借助于外力的作用复位。有的行程开关的头部还能在互成90°角的四个方向上任意安装，而且可以调整控制钮的位置，以适应不同的需要和满足单向或双向动作的要求。行程开关广泛用于各类机床。
