美国第一种喷气式战斗机。1942年1月9日开始研制，1942年10月1日首飞。xp-59a 空重 7,320 磅，满载重量 1,256 磅，翼展 45 英尺 6 英寸，长度 28 英尺 2 英寸，高度 12 英尺 4 英寸，翼面积 386 平方英尺。
p-59b，全部都改装了 j31-ge-5 发动机，最大航程提升到 950 英里，空重增加到 8,165 磅，正常和满载载重量为 11,049 磅和 13,700 磅，最后 1 架 p-59b 的交付是在 1949 年 5 月。绝大多数 p-59a/b 都分配在了 14 航空队的 412 战斗机联队，基地位于穆洛克干湖，在那里主要从事训练任务。
p-59a 系列总计生产了 66 架，3 架 xp-59a，13 架 yp-59a（含 3 架海军的 yf2l-1），20 架 p-59a 和 30 架 p-59b。p-59a 从来没有上过战场，公众对它也知之甚少，但它作为美国空军和航空界喷气式飞机的先行者，做出了不可磨灭的贡献。如今，仅有 6 架 p-59a 系列还留存于世，陈列在博物馆中向后人展示它的风采，1 架 yp-59a，1 架 xp-59a，1 架 p-59a，3 架 p-59b。
