又称“解约退还金”或“退保价值”，被保险人要求解约或退保时，寿险公司应该发还的金额。在长期寿险契约中，保险人为履行契约责任，通常需要提存一定一定数额的责任准备金。当被保险人于保险有效期内因故要求解约或退保时，保险人按规定，将提存的责任准备金减去解约扣除后的余额退还给被保险人，这部分余额即解约金，亦即退保时保单所具有的现金价值。寿险公司之所以要进行解约扣除而不是将全部提存的责任准备金退给被保险人，是鉴于以下几个原因： （1）死亡逆选择增加。因为体弱者一般不会提出中途解约，而大量身体健康者解约后，势必使被保险人的平均死亡率提高。 （2）影响资金运用，减少公司投入。由于中途解约，寿险公司必须抽出一定数量的金额及时支付给解约者，致使公司损失一部分投资利息。 （3）附加费用需要摊还。签发保单的第一年超额费用因被保险人中途退保、解约而停止缴付费用，使一部分附加保费无法收回。 （4）办理解约手续需要支付费用。
