| 球状星团 globular cluster 星团的一类。因其外形呈球状而得名。星团里恒星高度密集，其中心区域的恒星空间密度比太阳附近恒星分布的密度大1000倍左右。星团的半径为几十秒差距，质量为几万到几十万太阳质量。属晕星族。在银河系里呈球状分布，但却沿着偏心率很大的椭圆轨道绕银心旋转。球状星团的成员星是银河系里最老的一批恒星，年龄达一百亿年。星团里发现了大量的天琴座RR型变星和星族Ⅱ造父变星，利用这些变星可以准确地定出球状星团的距离。目前已发现了130多个球状星团。据估计，银河系可能包含500个球状星团。全天最亮的球状星团是半人马座ω，即NGC5139。近年来在一些球状星团里发现了X射线源和脉冲星 ，对于研究球状星团的性质和恒星演化具有重要意义。另外，在一些较近的星系里也发现了球状星团。
