性质:使含氮物质氧化的细菌。它们是自养菌,利用二氧化碳为其碳源,从氨和亚硝酸盐的氧化过程中取得所需能量。在河湖和河口常见到亚硝化单胞菌属和硝化杆菌属;在海水中则是亚硝化杆囊菌,常将氨氧化为亚硝酸盐。硝化细菌属自养微生物,包括亚硝酸细菌和硝酸细菌。亚硝酸细菌能将氨氧化为亚硝酸;硝酸细菌能将亚硝酸进一步氧化为硝酸。是工业循环冷却水危害菌种,特别是在合成氨厂和以亚硝酸盐为缓蚀剂的水中易产生。
