体长约500毫米。前肢比后肢长，上臂又长于前臂;手细长，手指又比脚趾长。无尾，无颊囊，具两小块黑色臀胝。雌雄的颜色不同，雄性全身黑色;雌性则金黄色，头顶及后头为黑色。两性幼体均呈淡棕色，惟头顶略带黑色。
栖息于热带、亚热带林区，多在固定的范围内活动。树栖很少下地活动。群居，每群10头左右，群中仅有1只雌性成猿，其余均为不同年龄的雄猿。食物以树叶、花果及昆虫为主，亦食鸟卵及小鸟。常饮树上的积水。雌猿9岁性成熟。每年产仔1次，每胎1仔，孕期7-8个月。寿命可达30多年。
数量极少，估计全国尚残存500只左右，现为我国I级保护动物。
