原为禅宗语。《五灯会元》卷十二载：有个叫狄三的人出家了，禅师给他起了个法名称“道川”，并教诲他说：“汝旧呼狄三，今名道川，川即三耳。汝能竖起脊梁，了办个事，其道如川之增；若放倒，则依旧狄三也。”“竖起脊梁”，谓站稳脚跟，振奋精神，专心参禅办道。这是一句禅家习用语。再举一例，如《五灯会元》卷十七：“其或见谛不真，影像仿佛，寻言逐句，受人指呼，驴年得快活去。不如屏尽尘缘，竖起脊梁骨，著些精彩，究教七穿八穴，百了千当，向水边林下长养圣胎，亦不枉受人天供养。”体现出佛家所提倡的“勇猛精进”的精神。朱熹亦好用禅语，其《语类》卷一零五谓：“道夫辞拜还侍，先生曰：“更硬著脊梁骨！”今亦常用此语，谓提起正气，振奋精神。如：我们要竖起脊梁骨，不怕威胁，不怕利诱，为建设繁荣公正的社会而奋斗。（李明权）
