产业革命以后，城市化进入一个新的时期,城市人口高速度增加。1851年,英国居住在各大城市的人口已占总人口的10.5%。美国在1790～1890年的100年中,城镇数目由24个激增至1348个，城市人口占总人口的比重由5.1%上升到35.1%。世界城市人口占总人口的比重由1800年的3%上升到1900年的13.6%。
