学名：Chamaecyparisobtusasieb.&zucc.var.formosana(Hayata)Rehder.
俗名：厚壳仔
形态特征：常绿性大乔木，扁平鳞状叶，叶背略带粉蓝，球果为球形，直径约1公分，聚生在枝条前端，树皮灰红色有纵向浅裂，呈长片状剥落。树形接近塔形，树皮厚具纵列条纹，与铁杉像「云片」般的树皮不同。此外，扁柏的枝干为「单干通直」型态，与铁杉的「很多分枝」有明显不同。树叶枝条为扁平形且密实而生，与红桧同属合称「桧木」。其叶尖钝，并不刺手，背面有明显白蜡，终年翠绿。果为球形，具果鳞。
栖地分布：台湾扁柏分布在海拔1500公尺至2500公尺之间的云雾带。与红桧构成台湾桧木林带之主要树种，为世界仅有，具有高度经济价值。
