首先，最好懂得车辆基本维修技术，出发前对车辆进行检查，是否漏油、缺不缺水等。不要等油跑光了再加油，油跑一半，看到好的加油站随时加，不要怕麻烦。
车辆的选择也应值得注意。如果道路状况很差，最好换一辆越野车，例如吉普车、切诺基等。如果想去越野，确知道路状况极为恶劣，可换4个粗纹路轮胎，以加强抓地功能。
