蓝藻门的 1属。藻体由单列细胞所组成的丝体，具倒"V"形分枝，绝大多数在一侧发生,为真分枝或伪分枝，藻丝外的鞘薄而坚固，或胶化而粘滑。细胞一般为腰鼓形或圆柱形；异形胞间生，球形或椭圆形。段殖体和孢子未发现。在胶鞘中往往有碳酸钙的沉淀。
本属仅 1种，即层理鞭枝藻，是普生性的温泉蓝藻。生长在世界各地的30～70℃温泉中，在冷水中绝少。
