| 赫斯（1906～1969） Hess，Harry Hammond 美国地质学家，地球物理学家。1906年5月24日生于纽约，1969年8月25日卒于马萨诸塞州伍兹霍尔。毕业于耶鲁大学，1934年在普林斯顿大学任教，1948年成为该校教授，1950年担任该校地质系主任。在海沟重力、岛弧造山作用、洋壳与蛇绿岩套的研究方面均有重要贡献。第二次世界大战期间在美国军舰上任军官，通过回声测深发现太平洋海底存在众多的平顶海山，并将它命名为盖奥特。1962年，在《洋盆的历史》中提出海底扩张的概念，指出在大洋中脊轴部地幔物质上涌，形成大洋地壳；随着中脊轴部新洋壳不断形成，先成的洋壳向洋中脊两侧扩张，最后在海沟地区俯冲返回地幔。海底扩张说复兴了A.L.韦格纳的大陆漂移说，奠定了板块构造说的理论基础。 |
