如同彩色x射线胶片那样，将黑白影象的密度变化置换成彩色变化的照片，可供肉眼予以轻松的识别。方法是以原稿的黑白负片作基础，制作三张黑白图象，分别用三色的光制成一张彩色相片。
由于矿物内部的裂隙或表面氧化薄膜等所引起的不同物理光学效应产生的颜色。由裂隙引起的称晕色，由氧化薄膜引起的称锖色，另外随不同观察方向而变化的颜色则称为变彩。有一定的矿物鉴定意义。
