颅脑超声显像是近年来发展的新技术，目前仅适用于2岁以下前囟未闭的新生儿和婴幼儿，亦可用于颅脑手术过程中探测颅内病变。这是因为超声受颅骨阻碍不能透过到颅脑之故。利用高分辨率扇扫式实时超声仪经前囟可进行一系列冠状面与矢状面扫查，清晰显示大脑的沟回轮廓、脑实质、丘脑、尾状核及脑室系统。对发现新生儿颅内出血具有重要作用。也可初步判定颅内肿瘤、囊肿、脓肿、脑积水，以及硬膜外和硬膜下血肿等疾病。
