在第一次环绕地球的航程中，葡萄牙航海家麦哲伦 (fernando de magellan)和他的船员有很多时间研究南半球的星空，也正因为如此，南半球观测者很容易看见的两团云雾状天体，就被称为是麦哲伦星云。现在我们知道这两个所谓的星云，其实是不规则矮星系，也是我们银河系的卫星星系。上图影像展现的是其中的大麦哲伦星系，位于剑鱼座内，距离我们只有18万光年。这个大小约为1.5万光年的星系，是银河系最大的卫星星系。影像左上方的醒目红色光斑为剑鱼座30，又称为蜘蛛星云，是大麦哲伦星系中一个巨大的恒星形成区。
大麦哲伦星系（lmc）是银河系众多卫星星系中，质量最大的一个。距离地球约179000光年，位于剑鱼座方向，平均直径约为15000光年。
