      水深大致在 200~2000米范围的沉积物。主要分布在大陆坡,又称陆坡沉积。大陆坡是一个分开大陆和大洋的全球性巨大斜坡,是大陆和洋盆之间的过渡地带。陆坡沉积物也具有明显的过渡性质,它既不同于浅海沉积,又有别于深海沉积。滑坡所造成的影响是它的显著特点。其物质来源以陆源碎屑为主,生物与化学作用形成的沉积多于浅海区,少于深海区。在有些地区,碳酸盐沉积的比重明显增加。
  
  陆坡沉积物的粒度小于浅海沉积,沉积物中约60%是泥,25%是砂,10%是岩块和砾石,其余的5%是贝壳和生物沉积。越过陆架坡折线后,沉积物往往从砂变成泥。粗粒沉积只呈斑块状分布,有些海区基岩裸露,它们常与崎岖的海底形态有关。
  
  滑坡沉积物在陆坡沉积中占有突出地位。其形成与陆坡的不稳定性有关,坡度过陡或沉积速率过大常导致滑坡。滑坡沉积体后缘遭受拉张,导致断裂;前端遭受挤压,形成冲断层、褶皱和拱起的小丘。在地形和地震剖面上显示为岗丘状、杂乱的坡面,不连续的反射层。在沉积岩心中可见到扭曲层理。
  
  大陆坡上广泛发育海底峡谷。它虽为侵蚀地形,但有的谷底堆积有大量沉积物,其主要特征是:沉积物主要为泥质,夹有少量粗碎屑物质;峡谷出口处往往是浊流沉积分布区;沉积物中普遍含有浅水有孔虫及海绿石;峡谷中常有更新世末期和冰后期的沉积物。
  
  第四纪冰期低海位时,河流穿过当时的滨海平原(现在的大陆架),将大量物质直接搬运到陆坡上堆积。沉积速率增大,沉积粒度变粗,滑坡沉积物尤其常见,在陆坡,特别是它的下部形成了巨厚的沉积。
  
  濒临中国的南海和东海的陆坡上,沉积物虽以陆源为主,但生物和自生成因的沉积也占显著地位,如南海北部陆坡上形成了自生海绿石砂;东海陆坡出现有孔虫等生源沉积物,并有浊流沉积分布。
