化学组成为Mg7[SiO4]3(F,OH)2、晶体属正交(斜方)晶系的岛状结构硅酸盐矿物。硅镁石与块硅镁石Mg3[SiO4](F,OH)2、粒硅镁石 Mg5[SiO4]2(F,OH)2 和斜硅镁石 Mg9[SiO4]4(F,OH)2同属硅镁石族矿物。同时,它们与镁橄榄石 Mg2[SiO4] 一起还组成镁橄榄石－块硅镁石多体系列（见多体性）。硅镁石多呈粒状集合体，晶体呈桶状，常见有聚片双晶。淡黄色、黄褐色、棕、红和白色，玻璃光泽,断口松脂光泽。摩斯硬度6～6.5,比重3.2～3.3。硅镁石族矿物是镁夕卡岩的特征矿物，广泛分布于白云岩或白云质灰岩与中酸性、侵入体的接触带。著名产地有意大利的蒙特索马、芬兰的巴拉古斯、瑞典的卡韦尔托普等。
