岷江上游地区是青藏高原向四川盆地过渡的高山峡谷区,山高坡陡,降水稀少,气候温凉干燥,土壤贫瘠,加上人为因素的影响,河谷地带性植被大量破坏,形成典型的干温河谷,导致严重的水土流失、滑坡、泥石流等地质灾害,当地可持续发展受到严重威胁。

   河水所流经的带状延伸的凹地。河谷内包 括了各种类型的河谷地貌。从河谷横剖面看,可分为谷底和谷坡两部分。谷底包括河床、河漫滩;谷坡是河谷两侧的岸坡,常有河流阶地发育。谷坡与谷底的交界处称谷坡麓,谷坡与原始山坡或地面的交界处,称为谷肩或谷缘。从纵剖面看,上游河谷狭窄多瀑布,中游展宽,发育河漫滩、阶地,下游河床坡度较小,多形成曲流和汊河,河口形成三角洲或三角湾。河谷是在流水侵蚀作用下形成与发展的:水流携带泥沙侵蚀使河谷下切;水流的侧蚀使谷坡剥蚀后退,包括谷坡上的片蚀、沟蚀、块体崩落;溯源侵蚀使河谷向上延伸,加长河谷。3类侵蚀方式经常同时进行,只是不同时间、地段各有所不同。河谷的发育受到气候与构造的影响。一般河谷形态类型有:隘谷、峡谷、宽谷、复式河谷。与岩层产状关系可分为顺向河谷、次成谷、逆向谷、偶向谷。其他还有纵谷、横谷的地质构造分类,幼年谷、壮年谷、老年谷的侵蚀轮回分类,以及古河谷、谷中谷等。
