由断裂活动造成的陡崖称为断层崖。断层崖不一定就是断层面，常常是断层面被剥蚀后退而形成的陡坡。较新的断层往往在地形上表现为断层崖。较老的断层也可以造成地形倒置的现象，形成断层崖线。
通常断层崖的走向线平直，在断层崖被侵蚀的过程中随着横贯断层河谷的扩展，完整的断层崖被分割成不连续的断层三角面。而三角面的前面常形成一系列的冲积、洪积扇。
