搜集、加工、贮存文献，并针对用户需求提供文献的情报机构。工作重点是加工和提供文献 (不是永久性地贮藏文献) ，编辑出版文摘、索引、目录和通报，筛选、提炼和重新组织文献，开展文献研究，提供文献复制品和译文服务。文献中心内部除行政管理部门外，一般包括图书部门、文献加工部门、文献出版部门和计算机中心等。在中国，还没有独立的文献中心，文献中心均属科技情报机构的组成部分。在国外，独立的文献中心较多，如美国国家技术情报服务中心、印度尼西亚科技文献中心等，均属文献中心。
