北大西洋的西风漂流。墨西哥湾暖流的延续。在盛行西风下，横过大西洋北部。在北纬40°附近分为两支，南支向南流，称加那利寒流；北支向东北流，至北纬60°附近再分为两支，一支偏向西北，最后成为西格陵兰暖流，另一支继续向东北流，伸入北冰洋。
