参与蛋白质生物合成终止过程的蛋白质因子。是将在核糖体上刚刚合成的多肽链由trna切断，使之游离的因子，亦称为r因子（release factor）。从大肠杆菌中分离出rf1，rf2和rf3三种r因子。分子量大约分别为4.4万，4.7万和4.8万。rf1能识别终止密码子（termination codon） uag、uaa；rf2能识别终止密码子uaa和uga，并能将其结合到核糖体上，由于50s亚基的肽基转移酶（peptidyltransferase）的作用，而促进肽基trna的水解反应。rf3的作用是可增加rf1和rf2对终止密码子的亲和性。从动物组织可获得单一的分子量约为25.5万的终止因子。
