古代曾广泛分布、现在仅残存于局部区域内的动物种类或类群,又称孑遗种。分为两类:①地理残遗种。分布区内大部分已绝灭，只残存在局部区域的动物种类。如中国的大熊猫(Ailuropoda melanoleuca)在更新世以来的历史时期内曾广泛分布于中国东部，而现在大部分地区都已绝灭，只残留在四川省西部和秦岭一带。②系统残遗种。在动物群的系统演化中绝大多数种类都已绝灭，所剩下的极少数种类。如中国的扬子鳄(Alligator sinensis),就是曾经繁盛一时的世界淡水鳄类中存留的少数系统残遗种类之一，现它仅分布于长江中下游一带。北美的同属种密河鳄(A.mississippiensis)亦是这种情况。
