      血红蛋白中的非蛋白质的铁卟啉组分,亦见于其他呼吸色素及其他动、植物细胞,分子式为C34H33N4O4FeOH,色深红,可溶于水。是原卟啉的亚铁衍生物。广义上是铁原子与卟啉环上 4个吡咯基的配位螯合物。因螯合的铁为二价(Fe2+)或三价(Fe3+)而区别为亚铁血红素(狭义的血红素)和高铁血红素。
  
  血红素为血红蛋白和某些氧化还原酶的辅基,参与生物体中氧的传递和氧化还原作用。衰老的红细胞破坏后释出血红蛋白,当血红蛋白被骨髓、脾、肝内的单核吞噬细胞清除分解后,成为脂溶性的游离胆红素进入血液,附着于白蛋白被输送至肝脏,在肝细胞内经一系列酶的作用,脂溶性的非结合胆红素转变为水溶性的结合胆红素,即直接胆红素,而游离胆红素则为间接胆红素。前者能自肾小球滤过,后者则不能。结合胆红素通过毛细胆管排泄至胆道,经肝管和总胆管至十二指肠,在结肠内结合胆红素被细菌还原成尿胆元和尿胆素,大部分尿胆元随粪便排出,小部分在结肠内再吸收,经门静脉而至肝脏,再转变为胆红素。再吸收的尿胆元中,有极小部分进入体循环由肾脏排泄。当血液内红细胞破坏过多,肝脏负荷增加,肝细胞内运送、结合和排泄障碍,或肝外胆道阻塞,都可引起血内胆红素浓度增高而出现黄疸。
