酸性超过一般浓度强酸的酸(约强106～1010倍)，属于通常的质子酸类或布仑斯惕酸类（见酸碱理论），例如无水状态的硫酸、 硝酸、氢氟酸和氟硫酸(HSO3F)等。如果在这些酸中加入五氟化锑(SbF5)，可以得到更强的超酸体系:HF/SbF5和HSO3F/SbF5等。超酸体系都是无水的，因为任何水溶液体系的酸度都是有限的。超酸有一些特殊性质,例如HSO3F有较宽的液态范围(-89～+164℃)。它们都容易提纯和提供较多的质子。因此,超酸可作为一种介质用于一些特殊物质的制备，例如质子化的分子氟代苯在HF/SbF5或HSO3F/SbF5体系中产生离子(见图)。还有一些在弱碱中会被破坏的阳离子基团，可在超酸介质中存在或离析出来。
