   地球陆地表面能生长植物的疏松表层。由矿物质、有机质、水分、空气和土壤生物(包括微生物)等组成。是岩石的风化物(成土母质)在气候、地形、生物等因素作用下逐渐形成的。它可不断给植物提供水分和养分,是人类从事农业生产活动的基础。自然环境和人类活动不断影响着土壤形成的方向和过程,同时也改变土壤的基本性质。
   土壤种类的分异和组合,与自然地理条件的综合变化密切相关。
   在湿润热带雨林、季雨林地区,主要为高度富铝风化、富含铁铝氧化物和三水铝矿的砖红壤。湿润亚热带常绿阔叶林下,形成多种类型的红壤、黄壤及向温带过渡的黄棕壤。半干旱热带、亚热带稀树草原景观地区为燥红土。干旱热带和亚热带为红色漠土。
   在广阔的湿润、半湿润温带和温带森林地区,主要为具有硅铝风化特征和不同淋溶状况的暗棕壤、棕壤和褐土,以及由森林向草原过渡的灰色森林土。当土壤湿润状况从沿海向内陆逐渐变干,植物由灌丛草原逐步过渡为草甸草原和干草原,土壤也随之由黑土、黑钙土向栗钙土过渡。
   极端干旱的温带荒漠地区,为多种类型的漠土,如棕漠土、灰棕漠土和灰漠土。由荒漠向草原过渡的地区,为具半漠土特征的棕钙土和灰钙土。
   寒温带湿润针叶林下,可见具有不同灰化特征的灰化土。寒冷、低温的极地及其边缘地区,形成苔原土和极地漠土。在高寒的高山冰川边缘,为寒漠土。
   与上述地带性土壤共存的还有多种类型的草甸土(潮土)、沼泽土、盐碱土、风沙土、石灰(岩)土、火山灰土、水稻土等。
