   中国活字版印刷术的发明人 北宋时人,生卒年月籍贯经历均无考据同时代的科学家沈括(1031~1095)在所著《梦溪笔谈》卷十八“技艺”中记述,庆历年间(1041~1048)布衣(平民)毕用胶泥刻字,每字一印,以火烧硬后制成活字。排版时,先在置有铁框的铁板上涂布搀有纸灰的松脂蜡,活字排满一框后,再在火上加热至蜡稍熔,用平板按压字面,使全版字面平整,活字也固着于铁板上,即可印刷。沈括并说:“若止印二、三本未为简易,若印数十百千本,则极为神速。”《梦溪笔谈》是记载毕这一发明传世的唯一文献,清代李瑶翟金生据以仿制泥活字印书成功也证明其内容的翔实。举世公认毕是用活字印书的第 1人,比德国用铅活字印书早约 400年左右,对印刷术从费工费时的雕版印刷发展为高效率的活版印刷有深远影响。
   此外,毕排版方法中全版字面平整、活字保持固定的原理,在现代活字排版工艺中也是科学的基本规范(见泥活字、《泥版试印初编》)。
