利用改变电机绕组的极对数而获得两种或两种以上转速的异步电动机。变更极对数的方法有以下两种。
①定子槽内嵌有两套不同极对数的独立绕组，每次只用其中的一套。由此可有两种不同的转速。
②改变定子绕组的连接法来变更极对数，以获得两种或两种以上的转速。图中所示为一相绕组的两个线圈 ab和cd。如果依图a所示的方向通入电流，则产生两极的磁场；若将线圈cd反接,两线圈电流方向如图b所示，则产生四极磁场。
以上两种方法中，后一种方法比较经济，应用亦较广。如果把两种方法结合起来，则可获得更多种转速。
多速异步电动机的转子绕组大多为笼式。由于其结构简单，工作可靠，易于经济地实现变速，因而在只需两种或三种不同转速的场合得到广泛应用。
