Paojlan炮舰(gunboat)以舰炮为主要武器，在近岸海区活动的水面战斗舰艇。用于巡逻、护航、布雷和对岸射击等。分为海洋炮舰和江河炮舰。有专门建造的，也有用其他舰只改装的。海洋炮舰，排水量不超过2 500吨，航速10一20节，装备有76一152毫米舰炮2一5门和小口径舰炮及机枪。江河炮舰，排水量多为数百吨，航速8一15节，装备有47一120毫米舰炮1一4门和小口径舰炮及机枪。炮舰出现于18世纪90年代。19世纪末，曾泛指排水量小于巡洋舰、装有各种舰炮的军舰。进人20世纪，随着驱逐舰、护卫舰和快艇的发展，炮舰的作用下降。60年代以后，导弹武器广泛装备舰艇，炮舰逐渐被淘汰。(林耀华)
