将原棉这样的无序短纤维纺制成连续棉纱或棉混纺纱的过程就是棉纺。纺纱就是要将无序纤维转为纤维集合体。原棉以压紧棉包形式进入棉纺厂，纤维呈块状无序状态，内含多种杂质和疵点，因此纺纱中需对先松懈，后集合，即先破除纤维间不需要的联系，清除杂质疵点，使之沿轴向排列成需要粗细的纱条，加以适当捻回，形成棉纱。
