巴西诗人。生于巴伊亚州。先后在累西腓大学和圣保罗大学攻读法律。在诗歌创作上，深受法国诗人雨果的影响,感情真挚,想象力丰富。他的爱情诗和描写自然景色的诗,如《青春与死亡》和《入睡的女郎》等,都具有典型的浪漫主义色彩。他曾积极参加要求废除帝制实行共和、废除奴隶制解放黑人的斗争，写了《黑奴船》和《非洲之声》等诗,揭露帝制和奴隶制的罪恶,歌颂自由和解放,被称为"奴隶歌手"。有诗集《浮沫》(1870)、《保罗·阿方索的瀑布》(1876)、《奴隶集》(1883)等。
