在天球的赤道坐标系中,天体的位置根据规定用经纬度来表示,称作赤经(α)、赤纬(δ)。我们知道,赤道和地球的公转轨道面也就是黄道是不重从合的,二者间有23°左右的夹角(天文学称之为“黄赤交角”)。这样,天赤道和黄道就有了两个交点,而这两个交点在天球上是固定不变的。黄道自西向东从赤道以南穿到赤道以北的那个交点,在天文学中称之为“春分点”。我们把通过这一点的经线定为天球赤道坐标系经线的0°。与地球经度不同的是赤经不分东经、西经,它是从0°开始自西向东到360°
