该炮是在wa021式155毫米加农榴弹炮的基础上研制的产品，1987年制定研制方案，先在130毫米加农炮上进行试验，1988年设计定型。
该炮在wa021式155毫米加农榴弹炮的下架前部安装了一台由493q型4缸水冷直喷式柴油发动机驱动的辅助推进装置，可赋予火炮最大行程80公里的自行推进能力。辅助推进装置由发动机、液压马达、传动装置以及*纵控制装置组成。
