化学成分为 YNbC 4、晶体属四方晶系的氧化物矿物。常含少量铀、钍等。以英国物理学家R.费格森（Robert Ferguson）的姓氏命名。与黄钇钽矿(formanite)YTaO4成完全类质同象系列。褐钇铌矿晶体呈四方柱形，通常成块状或粒状集合体。黄褐色至黑褐色，新鲜断面呈树脂或半金属光泽。摩斯硬度 5.5～6.5，比重 5.～56.8。随着Ta含量的增大，比重亦逐渐增高，黄钇钽矿的比重为6.24～7.03。硬度随水化程度的加深而变低。产于花岗岩或花岗伟晶岩中，也见于砂矿中。
