简况 16世纪后期，G.墨卡托等编制的《墨卡托世界地图集》(1595)，是早期世界地图集的代表作。以后，世界地图集的内容、形式、品种愈益多样化，由单纯的政区地图发展到综合性的地图集，再扩展到各种专题性的世界地图集。
类型 主要有综合性世界地图集和专题性世界地图集。前者代表作有英国的《泰晤士世界地图集》(1895)，《苏联世界大地图集》（2卷，1937、1940）,意大利的《旅行俱乐部国际大地图集》(1929)等。专题性世界地图集以1845年德国H.贝格豪斯主编的《自然地图集》为最早。20世纪初以后，各种专题性世界地图集陆续问世，较著名的有英国《巴塞洛缪自然地图集》(1911)、苏联《世界自然地图集》(1964)、英国《泰晤士世界历史地图集》(1978)等。
