    检验物体是否带电的仪器。最简单的金箔验电器结构如图,在接地的圆筒内有金属棒,棒的顶端装有金属盘或金属球,棒下端粘有一对金箔,金属棒与圆筒经绝缘体隔开。当验电器同带电体接触带电时,一对金箔因带上同种电荷相互排斥而张开一定角度。带电体的电势越高,金箔张角越大,经校正后,可由张角大小粗略测出带电体的电势。

   验电器还可用于鉴别带电体所带电荷的正负。例如,先以带正电的带电体与验电器接触,使金箔带正电,张开一定角度,然后,将待鉴别的带电体携至圆盘附近,若带电体带正电,则张角增大,反之减小。
