在故事片拍摄中，借场景中的发光体（不论是否在镜头中出现），着力强调或渲染的光线。可使镜头中表现的事物更突出，增强银幕效果，给观众留下深刻的印象。效果光在镜头中的运用须紧密结合影片情节，为刻画人物服务。离开了这个前提，一切效果光就失去它存在的意义。效果光大体分为两类:一类是写实效果光,即摹拟生活中实有的发光效果例如火光、电闪；另一类是意境效果光，即以假设或虚拟的光源，在镜头中表现某种效果的光，借以突出人物心理、表达某种情绪、暗示或象征某种意念。
