权衡利弊，舷侧式升降机被普遍应用于现代航母上。美国海军从“福莱斯特”号开始一律使用舷侧升降机，一般设4台，左舷1台，右舷3台。以“企业”号上的升降机为例，它是用镁铝合金制造的，长23.5米，宽15.9米，面积374平方米，自重105吨。这种升降机可容纳2架主翼折叠的a－7攻击机，具有1分钟内升降全重47.6吨的能力
