描述AchyranthesL.牛膝属，苋科，约15种，分布于两半球热带和亚热带地区，我国有3种，分布极广，其中牛膝A.bidentataBl.和土牛膝A.asperaL.2种，均入药。粗壮草本；叶对生；花两性，为单生或分枝的穗状花序，花后下反苞片和小苞片刺状；花被片4或5；花丝基部合生；退化雄蕊与雄蕊互生，四方形，有齿或有睫毛；子房长椭圆形，有胚珠1颗；果为一长椭圆形或阔卵形的胞果，内有种子1粒，和花萼及小苞片同时脱落。
