用手工或机械方法雕刻制成的凹版。分为 3类：①手工直刻凹版。将底样描画或转印在铜或钢的版材上再以刻刀、刻针、压花辊等用手工沿图样轮廊线直接雕刻图文，剔除线条两侧的碎屑，用三角刮刀及压光刀整修。②蚀刻凹版。版材上涂以抗蚀薄膜后，用钢尖刻针以手工在膜上划刻图文的点子和线条，露出金属表面，浸入腐蚀液片刻取出，在相应的小点子和细线处涂膜再腐蚀。如是反复涂膜腐蚀，使图文各处点线由于腐蚀时间多少而达到不同要求的粗细深浅。③机刻凹版。用机械法雕刻或划刻版材上的抗蚀膜后腐蚀成的凹版。有花纹雕刻机、浮雕刻版机、平行线刻版机和缩小放大刻版机等。电子刻版机则是用电脑控制的刻刀直接在滚筒金属表面雕刻，或是用激光束在滚筒塑料层表面雕刻。
