南天星座之一。位于猎户星座和天兔座南面。整个星座呈“人”字形。“人”字形的头上的那颗星，在空间以100公里每秒的高速飞行，是“恒星三大飞毛腿”之一。天鸽座在天球上的位置与武仙座、天琴座的方向正好相反，太阳系在空间是向着这两个星座运动的，因此，与天鸽座里的天体就愈来愈远。
天鸽座最初名叫“诺亚鸽座”，就是把橄榄枝衔回诺亚方舟，报告洪水已开始退去的一只鸽子。另外，还有一个传说，从希腊到科尔喀斯去取金羊毛的远征船“阿尔戈”号在进入黑海时，要从叫做“撞岩”的两块活动大岩石之间通过。这两块大岩石经常激烈地碰撞，把任何过往船只撞得粉碎。“阿尔戈”号勇士们先放了一只鸽子飞过去。当时两块岩石虽然猛烈地碰撞，但鸽子只被夹住一点尾毛就飞走了。乘着岩石重开的机会，“阿尔戈”号得以安全通过，最后取回金关毛。天鸽座就是这只鸽子的化身。
