科中一个常见种。分布很广,向北可分布到北纬75
的北冰洋邻近海区。中国北方海域亦有分布。与其他海洋种类相比，诺氏僧帽的背甲很小,仅包围育室；背甲顶端延伸为一短小的锐突,是本种的显著特征之一。第1触角顶端分叉，每叉各有5根嗅毛，为感觉器官。第2触角发达，强大,成为运动器官。胸肢呈圆柱形，并有真正的关节，刚毛较粗。捕猎时弯曲胸肢,围住食物,再用大颚将猎物杀死，撕裂后送入口中。通常以各种微小生物（包括各种鞭毛虫和沙壳纤毛虫）为食。雄性体较小,但头部和复眼较大；第4胸肢基部附近具有交接器(见图[诺氏僧帽的孤雌生殖雌体]

为广温、广盐性种，营浮游生活，有昼夜垂直移动现象，白天栖息在75米深水层中，晚间上升至水表层。每年在一定时期（一般是冬季）内进行有性生殖。在此时期，种群消失，而留下受精的冬卵（休眠卵）。夏季繁殖最盛，常成为浮游生物中的优势种，也是中、上层鱼类（特别是幼鱼）的食料。郑重
