为了求出不超过n（n是任意给定的正整数）的所有不可约数（素数），只要把1及不超过n的所有正合数都删去。由于不超过n的正合数 a 必有一个不可约除数 p≤a的开方≤n的开方，因而，只要先求出不超过n的开方的全部不可约数（素数）p1，p2，…，ps，然后依次把不超过n的正整数中的除了p1，p2，…，ps以外的p1的倍数，p2的倍数，…，ps的倍数全部删去，就删去了不超过n的全部正合数，剩下的就是不超过n的全部不可约数（素数）。
