黑色、坚硬的玻璃质岩石。它是由断层瞬时运动、摩擦增温引起局部岩石选择性熔融、骤冷形成的，由玻璃质的基质和碎斑组成。基质可呈现流动特征，并常发生脱玻化而出现微晶和球粒。碎斑是原岩以及长石、石英单矿物碎砾，也可伴有熔蚀边，少见铁镁矿物的碎砾。碎斑一般为棱角状，无定向排列。假熔岩常呈不规则的细脉穿插入其他断层岩或断层带外的围岩中，与围岩的界限明显。细脉的厚度小至毫米以下，大至几米或十几米。假熔岩罕见。同义术语有假玄武玻璃、断层玻化岩、玻化岩。多数人认为这种岩石是地壳浅层断层地震活动的产物，因此，又称古地震岩。
