用于闭合或断开信号电路的低压电磁开关。由电磁系统、接点系统和传动机构等组成。当电磁系统的电磁铁线圈通过一定的电流（称为工作电流）时，电磁铁励磁吸动衔铁，传动到接点系统，使接点系统的前接点闭合，并具有一定压力。当通过电磁铁电流下降到一定数量（称为落下电流）时,电磁铁吸力不足而衔铁落下,前接点即断开，后接点闭合并具有一定压力。
铁路信号继电器要求在结构上前接点不能熔合，衔铁与磁极间有铜止钉磁路，不致粘合，电流不足时靠地心吸力能使接点落下。具有一定故障－安全性能的信号继电器，称为铁路信号的安全型继电器。
